With the COVID-19 spread going through Europe, global filmmakers are experiencing a crisis that is unprecedented in the history of modern cinema.

Last week, the 73rd Cannes Film Festival — which was planned to be held from May 12 to 23 — was postponed, with organizers exploring the possibility of hosting the event around the end of June. It's by far the largest global film event to be affected by coronavirus pandemic.

Independent cinemas across Europe, which were forced to close over the coronavirus outbreak, have reported an outpouring of support from film enthusiasts asking if they could buy gift certificates and join membership schemes to give these "zero ticketing income" cinemas some financial support.

British director Edgar Wright, best known for Baby Driver, voiced his support for such an approach, urging people to become members of their favorite cinemas.

Thierry Breton, a commissioner of the European Union, has asked Netflix to limit streaming of its films and TV series to standard definition, not high definition, or HD, streams, which require more online bandwidth, at peak times.
